T Bone Steak Versus A Porterhouse Steak
What Are The Differences Between A T Bone Steak & A Porterhouse Steak?
The reason a T bone steak is named this way is because it has a very specific T-shaped bone once it is finally cut. The place that this particular steak is cut from is the area right between the tenderloin and the top loin. The only way a steak is actually a T bone steak is that the tenderloin area within the steak needs to be at least a half inch across for it to qualify.
This particular type of steak is very similar to what is known as the porterhouse cut, but they do not have nearly as much of the tenderloin within them. Truth be told, these steaks are also a little bit tougher than porterhouse steaks but they are really both tender and succulent and make excellent choices for the barbecue or just a regular dinner.

What Are Some Other Characteristics of T Bone Steaks?
The other characteristic of the T bone steak is that there needs to be meat on both sides of the T-shape in order for it to be a true T-bone. The meat on both sides will be often unequal in quantity. The broader side of the meat will be directly from the top loin and the side that is smaller will be from the tenderloin. So theoretically, there are technically two different cuts of meat. If you were to separate both sides you would have one individual top loin steak and another filet mignon steak which is tremendous and a prime cut.
Another thing you might not know about the this steak is that it is often known as an emergency steak. It’s known by this name because it doesn’t take a lot of time to cook it and you can prepare it really quickly and on short notice if you have a group of unexpected guests that arrive at your home.
What Are The Quickest Ways To Prepare T Bone Steaks?
The methods of cooking this particular type of steak are more suited to the dry heating methods like broiling, pan frying and grilling. The reason it doesn’t take this steak long to cook is because there is a lot less collagen within the tissue and it is also a very tender cut of meat so it cooks faster than most other steaks available.
Here’s a T-bone steak recipe that I know you are going to love. First let’s get to the ingredients:
- Three quarters of a teaspoon of onion powder
- Three quarters of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper, or to taste
- 1 1/2 teaspoons of black ground pepper
- 4 teaspoons of salt, or to taste
- Three quarters of a teaspoon of garlic powder, or to taste
- Three quarters of a teaspoon of ground turmeric, or to taste
- Four (16 ounce) T bone steaks which should be at room temperature
- 2 teaspoons of paprika
- Three quarters of a teaspoon of ground coriander, or to taste
First, you want to preheat your grill for high heat and oil the grate lightly. Then you need to stir the onion powder, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, paprika, turmeric, coriander and cayenne pepper and mix them together in a bowl.
Next, you want to rub each T bone steak on all sides with the seasoning mixture that you just created. Then cook them on the preheated grill to the degree which you find them done the best.
A good estimate is to cook them for 3 to 3 1/2 minutes per side if you want them medium rare.
